Before any needle touches the paper, the fold itself tells you what happened and what it will tolerate a second time.

Reading the Broken Fold

Pick up a torn signature and, before anything sharp comes near it, hold the fold against the light. A fold is not just a crease — it is a record of every time that sheet was asked to bend, and it keeps the record unevenly. Some breaks along a spine are old news: creases that softened years ago under ordinary handling, stable in their damage, unlikely to travel any further no matter what happens to the rest of the book. Others are fresh — a tear made last week when someone forced the volume flat on a photocopier, or a rip that opened during disbinding because the thread was cut in the wrong order. Reading that difference correctly, before tissue or thread gets involved, decides whether a repair holds or simply relocates the failure a few millimeters over.

What the Fold Is Actually Recording

Paper is made of fibers laid down in a rough, overlapping mat, and a fold forces those fibers to bend rather than break — at first. Each time the same crease opens and closes, some fibers on the outer curve stretch past where they can spring back, and the paper starts to hold a memory of that exact line. A fold that has been through this cycle many times over years develops a soft, rounded break: the fibers have separated gradually, and the two halves of the sheet still sit close together because nothing forced them apart all at once. That gradual failure is different, mechanically and visually, from a tear made in a single motion, where fibers are pulled past their limit before they have any chance to soften.

Old Crease or Fresh Tear: Reading the Edges

The clearest tell is color. A crease that has been open to light and air for years oxidizes along the break, so the exposed fiber edge reads slightly darker or more yellowed than the surrounding sheet. A fresh tear exposes fiber that has never seen light, and it looks paler than the paper around it — almost a shade lighter, sometimes with a faint fuzz where fibers pulled apart rather than cut cleanly. The second tell is how the two halves of the fold sit together when you let go. Old damage tends to lie flat, because the paper has already relaxed into its broken shape. A recent tear often wants to spring or gap slightly, because the fibers are still under tension from whatever event caused the break.

Bench Note

Dry paper does not announce a fresh tear the way damp paper does. If a signature has been stored somewhere humid, a recent break can look deceptively soft-edged within a day or two. When the surrounding pages are noticeably damp-cockled, treat every fold reading as provisional until the sheet has had time to stabilize at room humidity.

A crease that has gone soft is asking to be supported. A tear with pale, loose fibers is asking why it happened at all — and that question usually matters more than the repair itself.

Grain Direction Changes the Story

None of this reads correctly without knowing which way the paper's grain runs, because a fold made with the grain behaves nothing like one made against it. Grain-aligned folds distribute stress along the length of the fiber and tend to age into that soft, rounded break described above, even after heavy use. Cross-grain folds concentrate stress across the fiber's short axis, and they fail earlier, more sharply, and closer to a straight line — a pattern that can look like fresh damage even when the book is decades old. Before drawing any conclusion about a fold's age, a quick grain check keeps the reading honest:

  • Flex the sheet gently in both directions near the spine edge — it will bend more easily with the grain than against it.
  • Compare the suspect fold to an undamaged fold elsewhere in the same signature; grain direction is consistent across one sheet.
  • Note whether the break runs perfectly straight (often cross-grain) or slightly wandering (often with-grain).

What Each Pattern Means for Repair Strategy

An old, grain-aligned crease that lies flat usually needs the least intervention — a thin support on the verso, applied with an adhesive gentle enough not to stiffen the fold further, is often enough to keep it from progressing. A fresh cross-grain tear is a different job entirely: the fibers are still under tension, the edges may not align cleanly on the first try, and rushing the repair can trap that tension under the mend, where it resurfaces months later as a new break just beside the old one. In practice, this means slowing down on anything that reads as recent damage and taking the extra step of dry-fitting the two halves before any adhesive touches the paper. When to Stop Reading and Start Testing

Reading a fold by eye gets you most of the way, but not all of it. When color, edge texture, and rest position disagree with each other — an old-looking color on an edge that still springs, say — the honest move is a small mechanical test rather than a guess. A gentle, controlled flex along the existing line, watched closely, will usually confirm whether the paper wants to follow its old path or is about to open somewhere new. That five-minute check, done before any thread or tissue commits the repair to a direction, is often the difference between a fold that holds for another decade and one that needed a second visit to the bench within the year.
